The value of public transit in northwest Ohio takes another step in late 2024, with the arrival of the TARTA Card, featuring fare capping.
Fare capping will allow fixed-route riders to get the value of an extended pass without paying the full upfront fee. As long as they are paying with the TARTA Card, a customer would not pay more than $3 per day, $15 per week or $45 per 31-day period for their rides.
There are now 3 easy ways to get the best fares every time you ride:
FARE-CAPPING TIP:
Whether you choose to use the TARTA Card or one of our apps to pay, remember to only use one method to reach your fare cap.
TARTA offers several different fare types and purchase options to best meet your needs when using the fixed-route and paratransit system. All pass and regular ticket purchases can be made on the bus, through EZfare/Transit App, or at the TARTA Transit Hub but do not qualify or count toward fare-capping. Riders can only access fare-capping through the TARTA Card, or Tap & Ride through EZfare or Transit App.

How much will this save me?
If you ride TARTA fixed-route two times per day using the TARTA Card, you can save at minimum $6/week and $39/month.
Fare capping does not apply to purchasing passes or tickets within the EZfare or Transit apps. Fare capping is reached only when using Tap & Ride either in the apps or with the TARTA Card.
When will these cards be available?
TARTA plans to roll this program out later in 2024. Be on the lookout for future communications about the TARTA Card to find out exactly how and when you can obtain one.
How would paying with the TARTA Card change how I board?
TARTA Card holders will simply tap their card or smartphone over the EZfare reader at the front of bus upon boarding.
How can I load my fare on the card?
You will be able to load cash on to the card at TARTA’s Transit Hub and other area locations via Vanilla Direct. You will still be able to pay via cash or pass on board and by using EZfare if you wish. The TARTA Card is simply a way for regular customers to save money.
Can I use the EZfare or Transit App to access fare-capping?
The TARTA Card, EZfare and Transit App all offer the benefits and savings of fare capping.
No matter which form of Tap & Ride you choose, please utilize the same method each time you ride to ensure your spending is tracked to access the benefits fare capping. For instance, if you use the TARTA Card on one ride and the EZfare on the next, your rides will not be tracked together.
