TARTA Zero

On the Way to Zero

The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority has a history of not just connecting northwest Ohioans to their community, but of efforts to make that community a healthier place.

As one example, TARTA continues to make progress on its TARTA Zero initiative, an effort to add electric and zero-emission vehicles to all parts of its fleet.

The first of those hit the road in late 2023, with the debut of plug-in Ford Transit to TARTA’s paratransit fleet and the introduction of chargers to the garage at TARTA Move (130 Knapp Street). To date, Move has 6 electric vehicles on the road.

TARTA Zero arrived for the regular fixed route fleet in late 2025, with the arrival of 11 grant-funded, full-sized zero emission buses, and the chargers and training that come with them. Each TARTA operator and mechanic was trained to work on these electric vehicles even before they were dispatched on routes.

Four more EVs are due to arrive in the fixed route fleet in 2026, as TARTA continues to take steps to reduce noise pollution and slash its carbon footprint.

Why Zero Emissions?

With approximately one-quarter of the fleet close to exceeding its useful life,  TARTA is making it a priority is to replace these units with more energy-efficient models that offer improved fuel economy, lower maintenance costs, and reduced emissions. This may include hybrid technologies, renewable diesel options, and new partnerships to boost fiscal and operational sustainability.

TARTA continues to implement strategies to improve air quality and public health as well as reduce long-term operating costs, doing its part to support a health, sustainable community.
