Vanpool

Vanpooling gives TARTA another way to serve people who live or work outside the fixed-route and TARTA Flex networks or need to travel when those services are not running.  TARTA helps subsidize the cost of Commute with Enterprise vanpools for workers who have at least one end of their commute within the TARTA service area.

When you share a ride to work, you’re getting valuable time back in your day, saving money, reducing pollution, and enjoying the company of coworkers. Plus, you’ll be riding into work in a recent-model vehicle.

Sharing your commute with others can add up to big savings!  The cost is a feature of the number of commuters, vehicle size and style, and daily distance traveled.  Some employers also choose to further subsidize TARTA Vanpool as a transportation benefit.

No long-term commitment is required. Each van is rented on a month-to-month basis and your participation can be cancelled with 30-days’ notice.

To help promote the safety of all our riders, drivers must submit an application for approval before they can take the driver’s seat.

Process:

Each driver’s MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) will be checked annually & 5 days prior to license expiration.

Qualifications:

• Valid driver's license
• 25 years of age or older.
• No more than 2 moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the previous three years.
• No more than 4 moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the previous five years.
• No major driving convictions in the past five years (i.e. driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while impaired, failure to stop and report an accident, driving while license is suspended or revoked, possession of drugs or open containers of alcoholic beverage, reckless driving and/or participating in a speed contest, drag or highway race, or attempting to elude authorities).
• Be licensed a minimum of five years in the United States.
• Meet and comply with any laws/criteria required by the state where the vanpool is operated (i.e. medical requirements, drug screen).

Authorized drivers can use vanpool vehicles for limited and local utility mileage. Up to 200 additional miles a month can be added for trips like car washes, grocery stops and other errands around your normal route.

Some employers sponsor vanpool programs and choose to cover the commuter program cost for their employees as an employee benefit. Others choose to pass some or all the cost to their employees. There are a variety of straightforward ways we can set up payments for participants, including up to $340/ month in pre-tax payroll deduction. Our team of experts can help consult and recommend the best payment option for you and your employees.

For trips with at least one end planned within the TARTA service area, vanpooling programs receive local transit subsidies to help cover vanpool costs.

Commute with Enterprise provides an analysis of common commuter areas and locates transit gaps that a vanpool can help fill. Voluntary education events can be hosted at an employer’s worksite, or we can use voluntary employee surveys to help understand the needs of an employer’s workforce.

Driver and rider safety is always a top priority. Vanpool vehicles will have vehicle liability coverage, physical damage protection, along with 24/7 roadside assistance. Vehicle maintenance is closely tracked and is complementary to the vehicle’s approved driver at one of our 2,000+ approved service providers nationwide. Vanpool coordinators can access maintenance or roadside assistance info anytime, online, or right in our app.

Driving responsibility is shared among authorized drivers in the vanpool. Approved drivers are volunteers and can drive and change their driving preferences anytime, through their online profile. To be eligible, a driver must submit an application for our review and meet our qualifications before they are eligible to drive in a vanpool.

If you need an emergency ride outside of vanpool hours, we’ll help you coordinate alternate transportation according to the terms of our agreement. You may negotiate a set number of guaranteed rides home (for example, the commuter can be reimbursed for a number of emergency Uber/Lyft rides per year).
