Zero Emissions Transition
Starting in 2023, TARTA intends for all remaining transit vehicle procurements to be Zero Emission Buses (ZEB) until the fleet is fully transitioned. TARTA is expected to reach its transition to a zero-emission fleet by 2035. The expected total capital cost of vehicles for the transition to a ZEB fleet is estimated at $180 million. TARTA is prepared to pursue funding opportunities at the federal, state, and local level in order to achieve this goal.

On the Way to Zero
The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority has a history of not just connecting northwest Ohioans to their community, but of efforts to make that community a healthier place.
As one example, TARTA continues to make progress on its TARTA Zero initiative, an effort to add electric and zero-emission vehicles to both the paratransit and fixed-route fleets.
The first of those hit the road in late 2023, with the debut of a plug-in Ford Transit to TARTA’s paratransit fleet and the introduction of chargers to the garage at TARTA Move (130 Knapp Street). Four more plug-in paratransit vehicles arrived in 2024 and early 2025.
TARTA Zero comes to the regular fixed route fleet soon, with the arrival of 11 grant-funded, full-sized zero emission buses, and the chargers and training that come with them. In early 2024, TARTA won a competitive grant from Ohio’s EPA and the Ohio Department of Transportation for three more electric full-sized buses. TARTA’s leadership plans to continue to aggressively pursue additional competitive grants, with the goal of a fully zero emission fleet by 2040.
