TARTA summer ridership up 7% over last year.
Agency credits rising gas prices for increase.
Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority experienced an increase in trips for its public transportation system from June through September with trips averaging 7% more than the same time last year. August experienced the highest ridership month with an increase of 9%, July 8%, June 7%, and September had an increase of 4% over last year.
TARTA credits the jump in ridership with the increased cost of summertime gasoline prices. Gasoline prices averaged $2.95 June through September, peaking at $3.259 per gallon of unleaded regular in July.
According to the Department of Energy, crude oil prices continue to rise and since June, the price of a barrel of crude oil has risen from around $65 to just above $93 as of today on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline in Toledo today is $2.96, up 76¢ from a year ago, according to the Oil Price Information Service.

TARTA running only its biodiesel buses on Earth Day.
Biodiesel better for the environment than petroleum diesel fuel
On Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 2007, TARTA will run only its biodiesel-fueled buses during its service hours.
Biodiesel fuel is an alternative clean-burning fuel made from domestic renewable resources such as corn and soybeans. Pure biodiesel is biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. Biodiesel fuel emits up to 20 times less carbon monoxide than petroleum-based diesel fuel.
TARTA is using the B20 biodiesel fuel as part of a study conducted by the Intermodal Transportation Institute at the University of Toledo. (B20 is a mixture of 80% ultra-low-sulfur diesel--ULSD--fuel and 20% methyl ester biofuel, made with soybean oil and yellow grease--primarily recycled cooking oil from restaurants). The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of using these two fuels on engine emissions and air quality in-side the bus as well as on operating costs including fuel economy and maintenance costs. In addition, the impact on engine wear is assessed by examining the metal content of the engine oil after each oil change. These cost factors are combined to estimate and compare the total life cycle costs of operating vehicles on diesel fuel and B-20. This study involved 48 buses from TARTA and 10 vehicles from the City of Toledo.
The study is being conducted with a $1.5 million grant made possible by Ohio 9th District Representative Marcy Kaptur. Congresswoman Kaptur is committed to America’s “energy independence” by replacing imported petroleum with renewable energy such as biofuels.

TARTA improves Call-A-Ride efficiency and expands hours, adds an express route and a Mud Hens shuttle stop.
Shorter wait and ride times expected for Call-A-Ride users.
Beginning March 25, users of TARTA’s Call-A-Ride service, currently available in the communities of Maumee, Perrysburg, Rossford, Sylvania/Sylvania Township, Spencer Township, and Waterville, are likely to experience a shorter waiting and ride time due to changes in how the service is provided.
As of next week, TARTA Call-A-Ride service will operate with maximum flexibility between time points. A more flexible service was introduced for the Perrysburg Call-A-Ride in August 2006 as a pilot program. TARTA Call-A-Ride is also extending its service hours in Maumee, Rossford, and Sylvania.
Also available next week will be another TARTA express route to the Owens-Illinois Inc. campus at the Levis business park in Perrysburg.
